Viramgam Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Late Cretaceous

Province:
W.India Cambay Basin

Type Locality and Naming

SUBSURFACE: Well Viramgam Structure-I (interval 953.3 m to 1182.5 m+), its thickness is of 229.03 m. [Original Publication: Roy Choudhary, S.C., Mathur, R.B., and Mishra, G.S., 1972: Subsurface stratigraphy of Tharad-Serau area, N.W. Gujarat, Bull. ONGC. Vol. 9(2)]. The sequence has been encountered in Cambay basin subsurface in Viramgam Structure-I below the Deccan Trap and has been designated as the Viramgam Formation by Chowdhary and Kumar (1974). Reference well: Well Detroj-4 (interval 1545 m to 1720 m), its thickness is 175 m.

Synonyms: Roychoudhary et al. (1972) described the formation as the ‘Viramgam Sandstone’.

Lithology and Thickness

Sandstone. In the type section, the formation consists of sandstone, reddish-brown to brick red, white in color, medium- to fine-grained, gritty, highly ferruginous, silty, quartzitic, non-calcareous, current-bedded, intercalated with dolomite at places. Ferruginous matter diminishes towards the lower part where sandstone becomes light pink to white, medium to coarse grained, subangular, translucent, well sorted and non-calcareous with ashy grey algal bedding planes. In reference section, Detroj-4 well, it comprises dominantly of sandstone, coarse- to medium-grained, ferruginous, and quartzitic in nature. In well Dhanduka-1, the Viramgam Formation comprises mainly of coarse-grained sandstones with occasional lateritized claystone.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The formation in the type well has unconformable relationship with the overlying Deccan Trap and lower contact is not encountered. In Detroj-4 along the western margin in the north, it overlies the Pre-Cambrian Basement gabbro with an unconformity.

Upper contact

In Detroj-4 along the western margin in the north, it overlies the Pre-Cambrian Basement gabbro with an unconformity. In Dhanduka-1, its lower contact with the Dhanduka Fm of Early Cretaceous age is conformable.

Regional extent

It is stratigraphically equivalent to the outcropping Wadhawan Fm of Kutch and Saurashtra.
